There are three main options when it comes to choosing a new boiler for your home :
- Conventional
- Combi
- System
System boilers work the same way as conventional boilers, but if you still are curious about their differences, we can have our heating adviser explain. Combi boiler, however, works on a different principle.
Combi Boilers
Combination boilers, or combi boilers, are the most popular type in the UK due to how they economically operate by heating only the water you are using.
Conventional Boilers
Otherwise called heat-only or regular boilers, conventional boilers carry hot water to your hot water cylinder and radiators.
Why get a new Combi Boiler?
A combi boiler heats water from the mains directly, enabling you to get hot water whenever you need it. It is space-efficient because you do not need a hot water cylinder nor a cold water tank, making them ideal for small apartments. New boiler installations are quick because they have fewer boiler parts compared to other heating systems.
Why get a new Conventional Boiler?
If you have many taps that you use at the same time, you will be comfortable because conventional boilers send hot water to them without compromising the strength of the flow. You will also have to get a cold water tank and a hot water cylinder which makes these type of boilers more suitable for larger houses with at least two bathrooms.
Things to Consider
Using two or more taps simultaneously could cut the hot water flow. However, the level of your mains water pressure could also determine the flow and time it takes for the water to heat.
Things to Consider
You require space to facilitate the installation of a cold water tank and hot water cylinder. Unfortunately, you can only have hot water equivalent to the capacity of your hot water cylinder, so when you use all of it; you will have to heat some more.
What are the signs that my boiler needs replacing?
There's nothing worse than a freezing house. Especially in those cold winter months when you rely on your boiler more than ever to keep your home nice and cosy. Here are a few things to look out for if you think you may need a replacement boiler.
Strange Noises
The older a boiler gets, the more worn its parts become. While you may find replacement parts, it can often save you more money having an entirely new boiler installed instead. A sure sign that your boiler's parts are becoming worn is strange, hissing or popping noises coming from it.
The boiler leaks
Boiler leaks are a particularly alarming hazard. Any leak from a boiler should be immediately remedied, as it could be a carbon monoxide leak, which is incredibly dangerous. It would be best if you replaced a leaky boiler as soon as possible to limit any damage it may do to your health.
The water temperature fluctuates
If your water takes longer and longer to warm up, or you find the tap running hot and cold intermittently, then this is another sign that your boiler will need to be replaced. If your boiler is not delivering the hot water you need and running inefficiently, then purchasing a new one is time.
It's over ten years old
Modern boilers generally last up to 10 years. Therefore once this age has been reached, it can often be a prudent move to have it replaced. While this may seem like an expensive move, it can often save you money and hassle in the future.
It regularly needs repairs
While having your boiler serviced every year can help you keep on top of things. Gas Safe registered engineers will be able to tell you if your boiler needs replacing. However, if you find yourself calling out a Gas Safe engineer relatively frequently to conduct boiler repair or that you need to keep replacing parts, then it may be a sign that you need to replace your boiler.
Benefits of installing a new boiler
While the price can be high to replace an entire boiler, some natural benefits come from replacing your old system, besides regular peace of mind.
Quieter boiler operation
With modern designs and high-quality materials, new boilers will run like clockwork. A new boiler's smooth operation is an obvious benefit, particularly if your boiler is situated close to where you sleep.
Smaller size
Modern boilers are far more compact than their ancestors. This means that by replacing your old boiler, you can be saving yourself space and money.
Improved boiler efficiency
It is estimated that boilers account for around two-thirds of your energy bills. Therefore, ensuring that your boiler is running efficiently can save you money every month. The majority of modern A-rated boilers run at an efficiency of 90%. This is clearly the best choice compared to running your old boiler into the ground, costing you money on bills, repairs, new parts etc.
Improved heating control
TRVs allow you to control the temperature in your home accurately. Whether you want your bedroom a few degrees cooler than your living room, these systems can provide you with a way of managing your environment.
FAQ's
Does installing a new boiler increase house value?
While it may seem expensive, installing a new boiler is an automatic return on your investment. It is estimated that a new replacement boiler can increase a home's value by up to 2%.
How long do boilers last?
If you make sure that you purchase a reliable system and have it installed by a Gas Safe registered engineer, your new boiler should last between 10 and 15 years. This lifespan can also be assisted by regular boiler servicing and maintenance once a year.
How long does it take to install a new boiler?
On average, a new boiler will take up to three days to install. Before the installation, you should take care to set time aside for an initial survey.
Does an old boiler use more electricity?
Boilers only tend to use very little electricity. The main uses include electronic screens and thermostats linked with your boiler system. A small amount of electricity is also needed as an ignition system. But like all old boilers, as their parts become more worn, they tend to use up more fuel and energy, therefore costing you more on your bills.
Will an A-rated boiler save on fuel costs?
As previously mentioned, modern A-rated boilers are far more efficient than their predecessors. Even though they may seem initially expensive, the efficiency of these systems will pay dividends in the future with the money you will save on your energy bills.
